This cycling excursion retraces the history of the Cividale del Friuli–Kobarid narrow-gauge railway, built between 1915 and 1916 along the route of the ancient Roman road through Pulfero. During World War I, it served to transport soldiers, weapons, and military supplies to the Upper Isonzo Front.
Known as the "Caporettana" by Italian soldiers and "Kokošar" by the people of Kobarid, the railway was heavily damaged during the Battle of Caporetto. It was restored in 1918, completed after the Armistice, and opened to civilian traffic in 1921. It became a vital transportation link for the Slovenian communities of the Natisone Valleys and the Friuli region before being closed in 1932 for economic reasons. Today, several remnants of the railway can still be seen, including tunnels, water tanks, and some of its original 16 stations.
Program
- 9:00 AM – Check-in and registration at the former railway station in Cividale del Friuli.
- 12:30 PM – Arrival in Kobarid.
- 4:00 PM – Return to Cividale del Friuli.

- Approximately 60 km (37 miles) on low-traffic paved roads and bike paths.
- Total elevation gain: approximately 350 m (1,150 ft).
- Guide: Antonio De Toni, certified environmental hiking guide (ASSO GUIDE).
- The route includes climbs and descents and requires basic cycling experience.
- Bring your own packed lunch to enjoy in Kobarid.
- A bicycle helmet and a valid passport or ID for crossing the Italy–Slovenia border are required.
- Suitable for gravel bikes.
- E-bike rental available.
- Advance booking is required; places are limited.
